Beware of SBI Rewards Scam: PIB Warns Against Downloading Unknown Links
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a much-needed alert regarding the cyber scam being carried out with SBI Rewards, stating that there is a false scheme going around which is fraudulently promising rewards and has asked people to stay alert and aware of the scams. This alert falls under the umbrella of larger campaigns launched by authorities in order to prevent more cases of fraud happening over the internet and targeting vulnerable customers through deceptive messages.
PIB Alert Regarding the SBI Rewards Scam
PIB Fact Check account has just highlighted a worrying trend recently in a post on the social media platform X formerly known as Twitter, that fraudsters are sending messages to recipients asking them to download and install an APK file to redeem fictitious SBI rewards. "SBI NEVER sends links or APK files over SMS/WhatsApp," said PIB firmly. Avoid installing unknown files or clicking suspicious links, as such action compromises personal and financial security.
It has been asking for carefulness in this era of digital frauds. Caution from PIB has given alert that no authentic establishment like the State Bank of India (SBI) will ask for sensitive measures to be taken by unknown messages or downloads.
Step taken by RBI Against Cyber Frauds
The Reserve Bank of India has been developing an advanced AI system that can detect cyber scams in real-time by the tide of online fraud. This new and innovative system allows banks to access a central data base containing information on different frauds and fraudsters. RBI is working with AI technology to alert users regarding suspicious transactions before they are executed. This will provide enhanced safety in digital banking.
Cyber Fraud Trends in India
Cyber fraud cases have risen sharply in India according to recent government reports. Digital scams lost people around ₹120.3 crore alone during the first quarter of this year. The government has already taken proactive steps against such threats, launching "International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System" for identifying and blocking spoofed calls masquerading as genuine Indian numbers.
Stay Safe from Cyber Scams
Consumer protection in the face of evolved online fraud requires awareness and vigilance. Always authenticate the source of any correspondence purporting to emanate from financial institutions. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading files that haven't been verified. It's steps like these by PIB and RBI that go a long way in enabling the consumer to protect himself/herself against such evil acts.
