Indian cricket team’s star fast bowler, Mohammad Siraj, has received a significant honor from the Telangana government, being appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). Social media reports suggest that Siraj officially took charge as DSP after reporting to the Director General of Police in Telangana on Friday.

However, the Telangana Police has since deleted their social media post regarding Siraj’s appointment. Additionally, Siraj has yet to make any official announcement on this matter.

Cricketers Serving in Police and Armed Forces

Siraj is not the first Indian cricketer to serve in the police force. Several former cricketers, including Joginder Sharma, Deepti Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Harbhajan Singh, have held positions in law enforcement. Harbhajan, now a Member of Parliament, no longer serves in this capacity. Additionally, former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, and Sachin Tendulkar was conferred the honorary rank of Group Captain in the Indian Air Force.

Social Media Buzz Around Siraj's Appointment

Social media has been abuzz with claims that Siraj assumed the role of DSP on Friday, with pictures of him reportedly taking charge going viral. Earlier this year, in July, the Telangana government had announced Group-1 jobs for both Mohammad Siraj and two-time world boxing champion Nikhat Zareen. Following the announcement by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, the state government amended the Public Services Regulation Act of 1994 to facilitate these appointments.

Telangana Government’s Promise of Employment

In June, following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup, Telangana’s Chief Minister had promised employment to Mohammad Siraj, who was the only player from the state in the tournament. Siraj has also played a crucial role for India in other major tournaments, including the World Test Championship final and the One-Day World Cup. Notably, Siraj's outstanding performance in the Asia Cup final saw him take 6 wickets against Sri Lanka. Siraj made his debut for India in 2017.

Upcoming Test Series Against New Zealand

After being rested for India’s recent T20I series, Siraj is set to return to action in the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand. Siraj had previously played in India’s Test series against Bangladesh, where he took 4 wickets and helped the team secure a 2-0 clean sweep. The first Test against New Zealand is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru, starting on October 16.
