Australia Outclasses India: 5-Wicket Victory in 1st Women’s ODI
Australia Clinches Dominant 5-Wicket Win in 1st ODI Against India, Megan Schutt Stars with 5 Wickets
Australia Outclasses India: The Indian women's cricket team was crushed in the first ODI against Australia during the tour of the country. The match, played on December 5, 2024, at Brisbane's Allen Border Field, easily chased down a modest target of 101 runs, sealing the win with 202 balls still to spare.
Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bat first. Her decision proved to be an error as her team lost wickets at a regular interval. Only four Indian batters could reach into their double figures. Top score for India was made by Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored 23 runs from 42 balls with one four. Harleen Deol was another contributor with 19, captain Harmanpreet Kaur managed 17, and wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh had 14.
Australia's bowlers, led by Megan Schutt, dominated the Indian batting lineup. Schutt took 5 wickets for just 19 runs in her 6.2-over spell, winning her the Player of the Match award. Alana King, Kim Garth, Ashleigh Gardner, and Annabel Sutherland also picked up a wicket each, ensuring India's collapse to a mere 100 runs in 30.3 overs.
India Women vs Australia Women in ODIs
Chasing back quickly, Australia lost five wickets before still keeping very few runs to get. A decent opening batter Georgia Voll stabilized with a strong un.run chase with 46 runs in 42 deliveries for six boundaries and a six. Phoebe Litchfield scored 35 in 29 balls with eight boundaries, emphasizing how far apart the teams are on the day.
On the Indian side, Renuka Singh Thakur took three wickets, while Priya Mishra grabbed two. But the low total meant that even the efforts from the bowling side could not save India from losing.
India will have to make substantial changes before the second ODI, which is on December 8 at the same venue. The team needs to figure out how to counter Australia's strong bowling line-up and strengthen their batting to avoid another big defeat.
