Indian track and field athlete Harmilan Bains has opened up about the darkest phase of her career, revealing that she struggled with depression and contemplated suicide after failing to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Olympic dream, cherished by athletes worldwide, can sometimes lead to immense disappointment and mental health challenges when it remains unfulfilled.

Bains, a celebrated runner, shared her story at the final of the 63rd Subroto Cup Junior Boys Tournament held at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. She addressed young athletes, sharing her personal challenges and offering advice based on her experiences. Bains admitted that the disappointment of not making it to the Paris Olympics pushed her into depression, where she frequently thought about ending her life.

A Career Filled with Challenges

Bains' athletic journey has been full of obstacles. In 2021, she achieved significant success, winning multiple individual races. However, that same year, she was forced to undergo knee surgery, which kept her away from the track for 10 months. Despite the setback, she made a strong comeback in 2022, securing silver medals in both the 800m and 1500m categories at the Asian Games. At one point, Bains held the national record for the 1500m race, but she ultimately failed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“I Wanted to Commit Suicide”

Reflecting on her struggle, Bains said, "My message to young athletes is to enjoy your sport and not take too much stress. After failing to qualify for the Olympics, I was under tremendous pressure and slipped into depression. I wanted to commit suicide. I felt like running away from everything."

She also addressed parents, urging them to allow their children the freedom to pursue their passions without overwhelming expectations.

Harmilan Bains' revelation sheds light on the immense pressure athletes face and underscores the importance of mental health support in competitive sports.
