AR Rahman Faces Backlash for Using #Arrsairaabreakup in Divorce Announcement
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman recently shared a post confirming his separation from wife Saira Banu after 29 years of marriage. However, the internet erupted in criticism when he used the hashtag #Arrsairaabreakup in the announcement. Fans and social media users were quick to react, questioning the appropriateness of using a hashtag for such a personal and sensitive matter.
In his post, Rahman expressed his sadness over the separation, stating that despite their deep love for each other, the couple had reached a point where the "insurmountable gap" between them could not be bridged. He thanked friends for respecting their privacy during this difficult time. However, the hashtag #Arrsairaabreakup, which accompanied the post, did not sit well with many, who felt it was an insensitive attempt to gain attention during a private moment.
The backlash was swift, with many users criticizing the decision to use a hashtag in a situation that called for privacy. One user sarcastically wrote, "This will give you full privacy as per the new X-Privacy law." Another comment read, "Bro, that hashtag is going to be talked about more than your breakup." Many questioned whether Rahman’s social media team was responsible for such a choice, with some suggesting that it trivialized the seriousness of the situation.
Saira Banu's lawyer had earlier issued a statement announcing the divorce, citing the couple's struggles to overcome the tensions that had developed over time. Despite their love for each other, they decided to separate. The couple, who married in 1995, have three children together: daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen.
