Atishi Becomes Delhi’s Eighth Chief Minister: Embracing Legacy While Paving the Way for the Future
Atishi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, officially took charge as Delhi’s eighth Chief Minister on September 23, 2024, after her oath of office on September 21. In a symbolic gesture, she chose not to sit in the chair of her predecessor, Arvind Kejriwal, stating, “This is Delhi’s Chief Minister’s chair; this chair is Arvind Kejriwal ji’s.” As the youngest and third woman to hold this position, Atishi has retained her previous 13 portfolios, which include education, revenue, and power.
1. Symbolic Gesture: Atishi’s refusal to sit in Kejriwal’s chair highlights her respect for his legacy. She emphasized her intent to return him to power in the upcoming February elections, indicating her short-term role as a caretaker.
2. Acknowledgment of Mentorship: During her first media interaction, Atishi expressed her gratitude towards Kejriwal, referring to him as her “guru.” She underscored the importance of his leadership, stating, “There is only one Chief Minister of Delhi, and that is Arvind Kejriwal.”
3. Commitment to AAP's Vision: Atishi is focused on ensuring that the AAP continues its agenda, reflecting on Kejriwal’s example of dignity in politics. She noted the challenges faced by his administration, particularly from the BJP, and reaffirmed her commitment to support his return.
4. New Cabinet Assignments: Alongside Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj will oversee eight departments, including health and tourism, while Mukesh Ahlawat takes on labor and employment portfolios. Gopal Rai and Kailash Gahlot retain their previous roles, as the Delhi Assembly prepares to convene on September 26 and 27.
