Cyclone Fengal's Impact on Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Nearby Regions

Red Alert Issued for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry The IMD has issued a red alert for parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and surrounding areas as Cyclone Fengal nears the coast. The storm is expected to make landfall near Puducherry, bringing wind speeds of up to 90 km/h. The coastal districts will experience strong winds, heavy rainfall, and high tides.

Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected IMD officials report that wind speeds have already reached 50-60 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h. Between 1 pm and 2 pm on Saturday, the region will experience extremely heavy rainfall. Several areas will face scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout the day.

Affected Areas and Precautions

Several districts in Tamil Nadu, south Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala are expected to receive heavy rain, with coastal districts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram (near Puducherry) being the most affected. The IMD has warned of changes in weather, including high tides and heavy showers.

School and College Closures In anticipation of the storm's impact, all schools and colleges in Puducherry and many districts of Tamil Nadu, including Kanchipuram, will remain closed on Saturday. The public is advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore The Puducherry Fisheries Department has issued an advisory, urging fishermen not to venture into the sea. Fishermen have been instructed to move their boats and equipment to higher ground to avoid damage from strong winds and rising tides.

Emergency Response and Relief Efforts

The Department of Revenue and Disaster Management has set up emergency toll-free numbers (112 and 1077) to receive distress calls from the public. People can also contact the authorities through WhatsApp at 9488981070 for assistance.

As of now, a total of 471 people from 164 families have been relocated to six relief centers in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.
