Police Guard 1800 Kg of Tomatoes Overnight After Truck Overturns in Jhansi
In a bizarre incident in Jhansi, a truck carrying 1800 kg of tomatoes overturned on the highway late Thursday night. The accident occurred on the Jhansi-Gwalior Highway near the Sipri Bazaar area when a speeding truck lost control, hit a woman on a scooter, and toppled over. The tomatoes, which are currently selling at a price of ₹80 to ₹120 per kilogram in the market, were scattered over a 100-meter area along the highway.
Tomato Theft Prevention Measures Taken by Police
To prevent looting of the precious tomatoes, the local police quickly arrived at the scene. They cordoned off the area, ensuring that the nearby villagers and passersby did not take advantage of the situation by stealing the scattered produce. The police stood guard over the spilled tomatoes until the morning, with a video of the officers safeguarding the tomatoes circulating on social media.
The truck, which was transporting tomatoes from Bengaluru to Delhi, was being driven by a man named Arjun. Around midnight, the truck veered out of control and overturned after a cow suddenly appeared on the road. The truck’s helper sustained minor injuries, while a woman named Sonal, who was riding a scooter behind the truck, was injured in the accident and later taken to the hospital.
As news of the spilled tomatoes spread, locals gathered around the accident site. Some people began filming the incident, while others attempted to take the tomatoes home. However, the police acted swiftly to secure the area, and they remained on-site throughout the night to prevent any theft.
Rising Tomato Prices in the Market
The price of tomatoes has skyrocketed in Delhi and neighboring states, with retail prices reaching up to ₹120 per kilogram. The spike in prices is attributed to heavy rainfall in states like Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, which has damaged tomato crops. Experts suggest that prices are unlikely to come down until the new tomato harvest reaches the market.
The accident highlights the growing value of tomatoes in the current market, with police going to extraordinary lengths to protect the crop.
