The franchise owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) gathered at the BCCI headquarters on Wednesday night to discuss plans for the upcoming season. Among the numerous topics on the agenda, the mega auctions and their associated elements emerged as the most significant points of contention. According to sources from Cricbuzz, the meeting in Mumbai did not proceed smoothly.

Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), attended the meeting and expressed strong reservations about the mega auction. The Knight Riders had a stellar season, securing the IPL title by dominating the group stage and defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in both the playoffs and final. Khan argued against the idea of the mega auction and advocated for major player retentions, emphasizing the stability it brings to successful teams.

Contrastingly, Ness Wadia, co-owner of Punjab Kings (PBKS), disagreed with Khan's stance. The disagreement escalated into a heated argument, with Khan finding support from Sunrisers Hyderabad's co-owner Kavya Maran. Maran echoed Khan's sentiments, stating that building a cohesive squad takes significant time and effort.

Punjab Kings had a disappointing season, finishing ninth on the table with only five wins out of 14 matches. This contrasting performance further fueled the debate on player retention and auction strategies.

Reports prior to the meeting indicated that some franchises were pushing for as many as eight retentions before the mega auction. Additionally, there were suggestions to reintroduce the Right to Match (RTM) option, which had been discontinued in 2022 after the addition of two new teams to the tournament.

The meeting also addressed the potential implications for foreign players who default or withdraw from the IPL, causing disruptions to franchise plans. This issue was expected to provoke intense discussion among the franchise owners.

While the Ambanis, owners of Mumbai Indians, participated via video conference, several other prominent owners, including Kiran Kumar Grandhi of Delhi Capitals, Sanjiv Goenka of Lucknow Super Giants, Rupa Gurunath of Chennai Super Kings, Manoj Badale of Rajasthan Royals, and Prathmesh Mishra of Royal Challengers Bangalore, were present at the BCCI headquarters.

As the franchises continue to debate and negotiate these critical issues, the outcomes of these discussions will significantly shape the structure and competitive balance of the upcoming IPL season.
