27 Dead, 83 Rescued as Two Boats Capsize in Tunisia: What Led to the Tragic Incident?

The tragedy was off the coast of Tunisia. The deadly boat accident had killed 27, while 83 were rescued. The tragedy took place close to Sfax city near Kerkennah Islands. The boats were both carrying African migrants on their way to Europe. Many are still missing and rescue operations, which are headed by the Tunisian Coast Guard, are underway.

Tunisia's Migration Role

Tunisia is a vital transit point for migrants who travel to Europe, especially to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is just 150 km away. Though the conditions are dangerous and frequent shipwrecks occur, many migrants like this route. Mediterranean waters around Tunisia are known to be unpredictable weather-wise, with fatal accidents happening every year.

This is not an isolated incident. On December 18, a similar tragedy claimed 20 lives, with five people still missing. Earlier on December 12, another boat sank, leaving 27 rescued and 15 still unaccounted for. According to the Tunisian Human Rights Group (FTDES), over 600-700 people have drowned in such accidents this year, with their bodies yet to be recovered. In 2023, it was estimated that about 1,300 migrants lost their lives in the Mediterranean trying to cross into Europe.
