Indian Students Protest at Oxford Union Debate on Independent Kashmir - Read Now

Indian students protested at the Oxford Union debate on Kashmir's independence, objecting to panelists with alleged links to terrorism. INSIGHT UK also raised concerns about the debate’s integrity, sparking controversy over the framing of Kashmir’s political status.

The Indian students protested outside the Oxford Union Thursday against a debate titled "This House Believes in the Independent State of Kashmir." The event, organized by the debating society at Oxford University, has brought into the open political status of Kashmir, a region that for the last many decades has been contested between India and Pakistan.

Controversy over Panel Selection
The protest was about the Oxford Union choice of speakers favouring Kashmir's Independence. Pro-Motion speakers were:

  • Dr. Muzzamil Ayyub Thakur, head of the Justice Foundation and Kashmir Freedom Movement who is against Indian rule over Kashmir.
  • Prof. Zafar Khan, JKLF Diplomatic Bureau chairman.

Anti-motion speakers were:

  •   Prem Shankar Jha, media advisor ex to ex-PM V P Jha.
  • Yusuf Kundgol and Siddhant Nagrath, anti-independence side for Kashmir.

Speech on Oxford Union
In one of the Oxford Union's Instagram posts, the debate was termed an important discussion on present day Kashmir conflict and it described it as a "legacy present of Britain colonialism". The above statement highlighted the long-standing fight of Kashmir for independence and its sovereignty, impact of the issue on regional security, and the violation of human rights there.

UK organisation's argument against
For all the hullabaloo about debating so-called fringe elements, INSIGHT UK, a British Hindu group, has formally objected to the debate, questioning the integrity of the panel. "This is particularly alarming and raises serious questions about the integrity of this debate," it said on X (formerly Twitter). "Panelists accused of having links to terrorism whose induction into the panel has resulted in protests and an online campaign against them." The protest highlights broader concerns:.
The protest and objections by INSIGHT UK underpin larger concerns about the very framing of Kashmir's political status in global forums. Indian students argued that the panelists supporting independence lack neutrality and questioned their affiliations.
