PM Modi in Nigeria: "I Brought the Fragrance of Indian Soil" Pinpoints India-Nigeria Relations
Narendra Modi was on his first official visit to Nigeria after assuming office as Prime Minister of India. Referring to the depository relation between India and Nigeria, he gave a passionate speech about shared values of democracy and diversity underneath the bond of the Indian diaspora with these two nations. Speaking before thousands of the Indian community in Abuja, Modi said, "I did not come alone; I have brought with me the fragrance of Indian soil and the good wishes of crores of Indians." In this respect, he said India's influence in Africa must be huge, especially through democratic values. He claimed that one of India's greatest leaders, Mahatma Gandhi, spent considerable time in Africa, consolidating the historical relationship India had with the continent. He bragged that India is the "mother of democracy," while Nigeria is "the biggest democracy in Africa." The Prime Minister's message beneath all this underlined the fact that democracy and freedom constituted common values that linked India and Nigeria, two of the world's biggest democracies.
PM Modi said he was informed that the Indian diaspora in Nigeria has always been a source of support, and their pride over the progress India is making is reflected in the growing friendship between the two nations. He pointed out, "You are happy with the progress of India, and because of your progress, the chest of every Indian swells with pride, and mine becomes 56 inches." The Prime Minister emphasized that the diaspora community in Nigeria had celebrated the strength of India's democracy and its achievements.
Admitting Nigeria's place in the future of Africa, Modi showcased India's growing stake in the continent's progress. In the past five years, India has established 18 new embassies across Africa, thus widening diplomatic and trade ties. He will also receive Nigeria's top national honor from President Bola Tinubu, which he will accept graciously on behalf of all Indians. "Today, this honour is not for Modi, but for crores of citizens of India," he said.
It was indeed a visit testifying to growing ties between the two nations, in particular, aspects like trade, investment, and cultural exchange. India and Nigeria, a rich tapestry of history and diversity, will certainly continue to build on their shared legacy and work towards a promising future.
