Pune's Rising Star Anaya Bhavsar to Lead Team India at FIBA World Cup in Hungary

Anaya, daughter of Rajesh and Vrushali Bhavsar, has already made a mark at both national and state levels, earning a reputation as one of Maharashtra’s top players.
 

PUNE, Aug. 24, 2024 — In a proud moment for Pune and the nation, 17-year-old Anaya Bhavsar from Katraj has been chosen to captain the Indian basketball team at the Under-18 FIBA World Cup, scheduled to take place in Hungary from August 26 to 30. Anaya, daughter of Rajesh and Vrushali Bhavsar, has already made a mark at both national and state levels, earning a reputation as one of Maharashtra’s top players.

Anaya's stellar performance at the 74th Junior National Championship in Indore caught the eye of selectors, leading to her appointment as the captain of Team India. Her leadership qualities and basketball prowess made her the natural choice to lead the team on the global stage.

Throughout her career, Anaya has participated in 13 national basketball matches, contributing significantly to Maharashtra's success by securing six national medals, including two gold, one silver, and three bronze. She was also one of the five players from India selected to participate in the Basketball Without Borders camp in Abu Dhabi. Recognized for her exceptional talent, Anaya has been awarded the prestigious "Khelo India" scholarship by the Sports Authority of India.

Anaya’s journey began at Bishop's School, where she completed her primary education before moving to S.P. College. Her love for basketball, sparked in the seventh grade, was encouraged by her parents, who recognized her potential due to her height and athleticism. By the time she was 13, Anaya had already won a silver medal for Maharashtra in the Under-13 category. Today, she is not only the top player in Maharashtra but also the leading name in the national Under-18 squad.

Anaya's success is also a testament to the guidance of her coach, Lalit Nahta, who has played a crucial role in her development as a player. As she prepares to lead India in the FIBA World Cup, Anaya Bhavsar is a name to watch, embodying the dreams and aspirations of countless young athletes across the country.
