Shyam Das Prabhu Arrest: In a worrying development, another Hindu priest, Shyam Das Prabhu, has been arrested in Bangladesh's Chattogram district, just days after the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das. Prabhu, reportedly attempting to meet Krishna Das in jail, was taken into custody by local police without an official warrant, sources confirmed on Saturday.

This arrest will further ignite the rising tensions pertaining to Bangladesh's treatment of its Hindu minority, which has already seen streets filled with protests and violence during the past days. The arrest of Krishna Das, a former member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Bangladesh, was arrested this past week on grounds of treason. His arrest has taken the streets of Dhaka and Chattogram for protest marches demanding his release.

The situation turned volatile after Krishna Das was denied bail by a Chattogram court on Tuesday, which led to clashes between police and protestors. Assistant Public Prosecutor Saiful Islam was killed during the clashes. Bangladesh police have arrested nine individuals in connection with the murder of the lawyer. They are mostly from the minority Hindu community.

Amid the growing unrest, three Hindu temples in Chattogram were vandalized on Friday by a mob shouting slogans. The Shantaneshwari Matri Temple, Shoni Temple, and Shantaneshwari Kalibari Temple were damaged during the attack, which occurred in Harish Chandra Munsef Lane around 2:30 pm. The assailants, numbering in the hundreds, hurled bricks at the temples, damaging their structures. The Kotwali Police Station has confirmed the incident, with authorities working to investigate the matter further.

The arrest of Krishna Das and the violence that followed it coincide with a period of heightened political and religious tension in Bangladesh. Since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the country has witnessed a rise in violence against religious minorities, particularly Hindus, who comprise about 8% of Bangladesh's 170 million population. Critics have accused the military-backed interim government of failing to address the growing threats faced by minority communities.

The most recent arrests and attacks again put very serious questions about religious freedom in Bangladesh and the safety of a small minority, Bangladeshi Hindus who are caught up in a predominantly Muslim society in which they have historically suffered.
