Such day focuses on the promotion of education among communities as well as coastal communities around the world on the issues of early warning systems to save from the devastating impact that these tsunamis unleash on human life.

NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2024- November 5th has become a day for all citizens across the globe to spread tsunami awareness and take on active safety measures. Tsunami awareness day was a concept established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December of 2015. Such day focuses on the promotion of education among communities as well as coastal communities around the world on the issues of early warning systems to save from the devastating impact that these tsunamis unleash on human life.

Why November 5?

The selection of November 5 has a fascinating historical background in a traditional Japanese legend called Inamura-no-hi, or the "burning of the rice sheaves." In the year 1854 after a devastating earthquake off the Japan coast, a village chieftain saw in advance signs of an about-to-occur tidal wave. To raise public alarm and encourage his folks to flee to higher uplands, he set all his precious rice sheaves on fire. To make it a big milestone and a landmark of preparedness as well as community vigilance against natural disasters in terms of saving lives and efficient timely thinking, this was done.

Japan's preparedness and development of an advanced tsunami early warning system puts her at the center of the global arena, making the decision of international observance of World Tsunami Awareness Day.
