BMW Unveils R 1300 RS: 145hp Sport Tourer with Boxer Engine and Adjustable Suspension Ahead of India Launch
BMW Motorrad has unveiled the all-new R 1300 RS, a faired sports tourer that takes a cue from what was established by the R 1300 R and GS. The R 1300 RS is a direct replacement for the R 1250 RS, and the vehicle is designed to hit the sweet spot where long-distance comfort intersects with sportbike dynamics. And indeed, it's heading to India shortly, positioned between the soon-to-be-launched R 1300 R and the already-launched R 1300 GS (₹21.20 lakh, ex-showroom).
Powertrain: Nostalgic Boxer, Same Savage Output
Under the fairing is the same 1,300cc boxer twin engine that drives the R 1300 GS and R 1300 R. The horizontally opposed twin produces a healthy 145hp at 7,750rpm and 149Nm of torque at 6,500rpm, married to a 6-speed gearbox with a standard bi-directional quickshifter.
Although the primary frame is borrowed from the R 1300 GS, the rear subframe is borrowed from the R 1300 R, maintaining it more road-oriented. The R 1300 RS weighs a tad more at 245kg—6kg more than the R 1300 R and 8kg more than the R 1300 GS.
Suspension and Brakes: Clever, Adjustable, Able
One of the R 1300 RS's best features is its adjustable spring rate on the USD front fork, making it only the second series production motorcycle (following the R 1300 R) to provide such technology. It also comes with preload and damping adjustment as standard, with electronic suspension an optional extra for those who prefer tech to do the work.
Stopping functions are catered to by twin front discs along with radial 4-piston calipers and a single disc at the back. The both ends 17-inch cast aluminium wheels minimize the unsprung weight by 1.4kg, increasing responsiveness. The 790mm initial seat height adjustable up to 815mm accommodates a wide variety of riders.
Design and Practicality: More Than Just a Faired R 1300 R
Consider the R 1300 RS to be the BMW equivalent of the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX—a sport tourer that combines aggression with everyday practicality. It has the same 17-litre fuel tank as the R 1300 R and sports a razor-sharp, aerodynamic fairing that announces its purpose as a highway mile-eater with sporting pedigree.
Electronics: Laden for the Long Distance
BMW has loaded the R 1300 RS with the latest electronics, including:
- Traction Control
- Engine Braking Control
- Active Cruise Control with Forward Collision Warning
- Three ride modes in standard – Eco, Rain, and Road
For enthusiasts, the Riding Package Pro introduces Dynamic and Dynamic Pro modes for crisper performance.
Variants and Colors: Four Flavors to Choose From
The R 1300 RS will come in four variants:
- Base Version
- Triple Black
- Performance
- Option 719 Cuyamaca
All of them come with distinct styling cues and color schemes, presenting customers with options between sporty, stealth, and luxurious motifs.
