ChatGPT Memory Upgrade: Now Remembers All Your Past Conversations, Says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT's memory feature, which now allows the AI to remember and reference all your previous chats, enabling more personalized, contextual responses across conversations.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman wrote,“This is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalised.”

This improved memory capability has already begun rolling out to ChatGPT Pro users, and will soon be available for Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users. However, users in the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein will not receive this update, as per current rollout plans.

What’s New in ChatGPT’s Memory Feature?

  • ChatGPT can now recall past interactions, preferences, and styles of writing or inquiry.

  • New chats will automatically build upon previous ones for smoother, tailored responses.

  • Users will have full control—they can opt-out, manage, or delete stored memory data.

  • A Temporary Chat mode is available for memory-free conversations.

OpenAI clarified,“In addition to the saved memories that were there before, it can now reference your past chats to deliver responses that feel noticeably more relevant and useful.”

User Control and Privacy

Users can access memory settings via Settings > Personalization > Memory, where they can toggle memory on or off, manage what has been remembered, or clear everything entirely.

Altman emphasized,“You’re in control of ChatGPT’s memory. If you’re already opted out, you’ll be opted out of referencing past chats by default.”
