The Delhi Transport Department has taken a significant step toward ensuring stricter enforcement of traffic rules by issuing tenders for the installation of AI-powered cameras across the city. These cameras will closely monitor traffic violators and impose hefty fines for offenses such as jumping red lights, talking on the phone while driving, or riding without a helmet.

On Delhi's busy streets, it's common to see people disregarding traffic regulations. Whether it's running a red light, using a phone while driving, placing a phone inside a helmet to talk, or riding without a helmet, such violations are frequent.

However, this is set to change. The AI-enabled cameras, which will be installed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aim to crack down on those flouting the rules. According to media reports, the Delhi Transport Department has already issued a tender for the installation of these advanced cameras.

AI Cameras to Be Installed at 500 Junctions

Reports suggest that around 500 junctions across Delhi will be equipped with these AI cameras, with implementation starting in 2025. The first phase will see 50 junctions covered. The primary goal of this initiative is to reduce accidents and improve road safety.

Data collected from these AI cameras will be analyzed to help devise future strategies for improving traffic management. The goal isn't just to issue fines but to enhance traffic flow and increase safety for commuters.

Fines via ANPR Technology

The cameras will use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to capture and read vehicle license plates, automatically generating fines for violations. In addition to issuing fines, the system will send alerts if a vehicle is reported stolen or has exceeded its allowed age limit.

One of the key features of this system is its ability to catch offenders who talk on the phone while driving with the phone placed inside their helmet. Additionally, bikers or scooter riders using footpaths or violating other traffic rules, such as jumping red lights or not wearing seat belts, will also be fined. Speeding, carrying three passengers on a two-wheeler, and riding without a helmet are among other violations that will be detected by these AI cameras.

This new system is expected to bring significant improvements to road safety in Delhi, curbing the high rate of traffic violations.
