Check Your LPG Cylinder's Expiry Date: Safety Tips and How to Avoid Gas Leaks!

LPG gas cylinder expiry date: As we move towards modern cooking solutions, many metropolitan areas now receive natural gas through pipelines, known as Piped Natural Gas (PNG). However, in smaller towns and villages, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders remain the primary choice for cooking. Most households keep two cylinders to ensure they can continue cooking while one is being refilled.

It is crucial to check the expiry date of the cylinder when buying one, as neglecting this can pose serious safety risks.

Important Checks When Buying a Cylinder

Before accepting a cylinder, it’s essential to verify a few things:

  • Seal and Weight: Ensure the cylinder's seal is intact and check its weight.
  • Leak Test: Make sure the cylinder is not leaking.
  • Expiry Date: Always check the expiry date of the cylinder.

How to Check the Expiry Date

The expiry date of an LPG cylinder is clearly marked on its surface. You will see a combination of letters and numbers. Each cylinder has a code that looks like A-25, B-23, etc.

Letters A, B, C, and D represent the months:

A: January, February, March
B: April, May, June
C: July, August, September
D: October, November, December

The numbers following the letters indicate the year. For example, a code of B-23 means that the cylinder can be used from April to June 2023. If you see D-25, it means the cylinder is valid from October to December 2025. If the year has passed, the cylinder is expired, and you should return it immediately and inform the gas agency.

Detecting Gas Leaks

When the delivery person brings a cylinder to your home, inspect the seal in front of them. If the seal is broken or damaged, it will come off with slight pulling. Never accept a cylinder with a weak or absent seal, as even a minor gas leak can lead to a significant accident at home.

Checking the Cylinder Weight

Gas agencies provide delivery personnel with devices to measure the weight of cylinders. When you receive a new cylinder, ask the delivery person to weigh it in front of you using this device. If they are reluctant, inform the customer care of the agency and return the cylinder to apply for a new one. While this may seem inconvenient, ensuring the safety of your family is of utmost importance.
