Tata Harrier EV AWD: A recent design patent leak has hinted that Tata Motors is preparing to introduce all-wheel-drive (AWD) and specialized terrain modes for its upcoming SUVs. The leaked design showcases a rotary knob featuring seven different modes, which could include Snow, Sand, Gravel, and possibly even a Custom mode. This development suggests that future Tata SUVs, beginning with the much-anticipated Harrier EV, may come equipped with AWD or even 4x4 capabilities.

Future Tata SUVs to Feature AWD and Terrain Modes

The new terrain modes appear to be designed for navigating diverse conditions such as snow, sand, and gravel, providing enhanced off-road capability. Currently, Tata Motors offers four front-wheel-drive internal combustion engine (ICE) SUVs: the Nexon, Harrier, Safari, and Curvv. At the launch of the Curvv, Tata revealed that its new ATLAS platform, which the coupe-SUV is based on, can be adapted to support 4x4 systems, though this would require some modifications.

AWD for Upcoming Harrier EV and Sierra?

While the next-generation Nexon will also utilize the ATLAS platform, the low demand for AWD or 4x4 configurations in the compact SUV market means it is unlikely that these terrain modes will feature in that model. However, the upcoming Harrier EV and Sierra, which are also based on this architecture, are expected to offer AWD configurations. It remains to be seen if Tata’s ICE-powered SUVs will receive the AWD treatment in the future.

Differentiating Terrain Modes from Drive Modes

It's important to note that terrain modes differ from the drive modes currently offered in Tata’s SUVs, like the Eco, City, and Sport modes found in the Nexon, Curvv, Harrier, and Safari. While the Harrier and Safari already offer traction modes such as Normal, Rough, and Wet, these new terrain modes would elevate off-road performance further. Competitors like the Mahindra XUV700, Scorpio N, and Jeep Compass are currently the only models in this segment offering AWD or 4x4 options, either as standard or optional features.

This leak hints at exciting updates for Tata’s SUV lineup, especially for off-road enthusiasts eager to see advanced driving capabilities in upcoming models like the Harrier EV and Safari EV.
