Uber’s Robotaxi Service Arrives in Abu Dhabi: Driverless Rides Coming in 2025
Uber introduces its robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, with driverless rides set to launch in 2025. Learn about the future of self-driving cars in the UAE.

Uber users in Abu Dhabi, UAE, may soon be able to book rides in self-driving cars. On Friday, December 6, Uber announced a new partnership with Chinese carmaker WeRide to offer autonomous vehicle rides in the city. This collaboration marks a significant step toward the future of transportation in the UAE.
Self-Driving Cars to Transport Passengers in Abu Dhabi
The self-driving robotaxis will initially operate between key locations in Abu Dhabi, including Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and Zayed International Airport. This marks a groundbreaking development in the region's transportation services, as Uber seeks to bring cutting-edge technology to the streets of the UAE.
However, Uber has clarified that while these vehicles will be autonomous, a human driver will still be present in the vehicle. This safety measure is to ensure a secure and reliable experience for both riders and pedestrians. For a completely driverless ride, Uber users in Abu Dhabi may have to wait until late 2025.
This initiative is part of Uber’s larger strategy to expand its autonomous vehicle services. Earlier this year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi shared that the company is working to grow its robotaxi services by partnering with more than a dozen autonomous vehicle developers. Khosrowshahi emphasized that Uber’s approach to autonomous vehicles is progressing well and that their partnerships are creating significant value in deploying driverless technology.

WeRide's Role in the UAE's Autonomous Future
WeRide, a Nasdaq-listed autonomous vehicle developer, plays a key role in this partnership. The company is authorized to test and operate its driverless vehicles in Dubai, UAE, as well as other cities like Singapore, China, and the US. With its expertise in autonomous vehicle technology, WeRide’s involvement promises to help Uber achieve its goal of bringing robotaxis to the UAE.
While fully driverless vehicles won’t be available for Uber users in Abu Dhabi until late 2025, the current partnership is an exciting first step in the region's move towards autonomous transport. Uber’s collaboration with WeRide is expected to pave the way for even more advancements in self-driving car technology and autonomous ride-hailing services across the globe.
As self-driving vehicles become increasingly popular, Uber is positioning itself at the forefront of this innovative technology, which could transform how people get around not only in Abu Dhabi but in cities around the world.
