YouTube, owned by Google, is testing a new two-person Premium plan across select countries, including India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, in a move to attract more users into its subscription ecosystem and reduce dependence on advertising revenue.

YouTube’s Two-Person Premium: What’s New?

The new subscription tier allows two people from the same Google family group to share either a YouTube Premium or Music Premium membership at a discounted rate. Both members must be 13 years or older and have active Google accounts.

  • YouTube Premium (India): ₹219/month

  • Music Premium (India): ₹149/month

This pricing positions the plan as an affordable alternative for couples, siblings, or roommates, offering flexibility without forcing users to buy the higher-priced Family plan.

YouTube Confirms the Pilot

In a statement to Moneycontrol, a YouTube spokesperson said:

“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option.”

This move follows similar strategies by Spotify, which already offers a Duo Plan that caters to two users sharing a household.

What You Get With YouTube Premium

Subscribers of YouTube Premium enjoy:

  • Ad-free videos

  • Background playback

  • Offline downloads

  • Early access to experimental features

Meanwhile, Music Premium focuses exclusively on music content, offering ad-free listening, offline downloads, and background play.

YouTube's Subscription Growth Strategy

YouTube’s recent steps to boost subscriptions include:

  • Cracking down on ad blockers

  • Increasing Premium prices across markets (India saw up to 58% hikes in 2024)

  • Launching new plans like Premium Lite for ad-free video viewing (excluding music and Shorts)

During Alphabet’s earnings call in April 2025, CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that YouTube crossed 125 million global subscribers, contributing to Alphabet’s 270 million+ paid subscriptions—a figure driven by YouTube and Google One.

Global Reach and Market Strategy

The two-person Premium pilot currently runs in:

  • India

  • France

  • Taiwan

  • Hong Kong

This regional rollout may expand based on user feedback and engagement metrics. It reflects Google’s growing commitment to monetization beyond ads, especially as YouTube’s total revenue exceeded $50 billion in 2024.
