Apple Inc. has scaled back its lofty plans for self-driving technology and postponed the planned launch date for its future electric vehicle to 2026.
- The news caused shares of the iPhone manufacturers to fall by 2.4%.
- The company’s automotive endeavors, known as Project Titan, have progressed unevenly since it first started building a car from scratch in 2014.
- Apple’s desired car would not have a steering wheel or pedals and instead have interiors designed for hands-free driving.
Apple is currently developing a less ambitious design that would still include a steering wheel and pedals but would only allow fully automatic driving on freeways.
According to the source, the company wants to build a vehicle that would let drivers engage in other activities while on the motorway and would give them sufficient time to turn to manual control after receiving an alarm. Apple has refocused its project to incorporate completely autonomous driving capabilities and is aiming to have its electric car debut as early as 2025.
