In a statement that implements the state’s EV policy published last October, the administration declared that all electric vehicles purchased in Uttar Pradesh are exempt from paying registration costs.
In Noida, registration fees typically account for 8–10% of the price of the vehicle.
“The tax indicated for Electric Vehicles (EV) purchased and registered in Uttar Pradesh should be completely waived for motor vehicles. According to a notification issued on Thursday by UP principal secretary L Venkateshwar Lu, the exemption is valid for any electric vehicle (EV) bought and registered in the state of Uttar Pradesh from the date the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy, 2022, was published up until October 13, 2025.
According to Siyaram Verma, assistant regional transport officer (administration) for Gautam Budh Nagar, the registration tax for electric vehicles in Uttar Pradesh was previously between 8 and 10 percent. “In the past, a buyer had to pay a tax of Rs 1 lakh for an EV that cost Rs 10 lakh. More people will be inspired to purchase environmentally friendly EVs by this tax exemption, according to Verma.
The UP administration had introduced a new strategy to promote EV adoption in the state more quickly in October of last year. The proposed incentives included discounts, subsidies, and registration fee exemptions. Few commuters have EVs as their primary mode of transportation as of yet.
According to data, the district of Gautam Budh Nagar has over 8.6 lakh registered automobiles, 12,500 of which are electric vehicles. Only 99 of them have four wheels, compared to 1,604 two-wheelers, 511 e-carts, 1 bus, 12 motor cabs, and the vast majority, e-rickshaws.
Noida Authority installed 69 EV charging stations across the city last year, but the majority of them are currently vacant. According to Sector 143 resident and EV user Abhijeet Sinha, the Delhi government has been exempting EVs from all taxes for some time.
“Because to this, many residents in the NCR opt to purchase EVs in Delhi. The fact that UP has provided a similar tax exemption is a wise move, as it will encourage people to purchase EVs in Noida, according to Sinha, who is also the project director of National Highways for EV (NHEV). NHEV is attempting to launch the commercial operations of an e-bus from Noida to Agra.
The announcement made it clear that vehicles with electric motors that are powered by batteries, ultra-capacitors, or fuel cells are included in the exemption. All two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell electric cars are included in this (FCEVs).
