This decision is likely to increase the prices of the cars. Till now, only car driver seat was mandated to be equipped with airbags.

“It has been mandated that the vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2021, in the case of new models, and August 31, 2021, in the case of existing models, shall be fitted with airbag for the person occupying the front seat, other than the driver,” says the notification.

The installation of the airbags on the passengers’ side was proposed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

While putting forward its proposal, the ministry had demanded it to become a mandatory condition for all cars.
