Honda, one of India’s most popular motorbike producers, is planning to release an electric 2-wheeler in April 2023. Although the specifics of the scooter are unclear, more information will be made accessible by March 29th, 2023.
Honda offers a wide variety of electric 2-wheelers worldwide, some of which could be homologated. Atsushi Ogata, President and MD of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, claims that Honda is aiming to establish a broad portfolio in India with 3 distinct categories of electric 2-wheelers that would be classed by their highest speeds.
A driving licence or registration are not required for the EB (electric bike) category, which will have a top speed of 25 kmph. At a peak speed of 50 kmph, the EM (Electric Moped) category is the second. With a peak speed of more than 50 kmph, electric vehicles (EVs) will be the third category. Ogata said that a high-speed EV will be introduced after the April debut of the electric scooter.
Ogata also noted that the company’s primary focus would continue to be on petrol-powered 2-wheelers, noting that this market is and will be a sizable one for the foreseeable future. Therefore, it makes financial sense to prioritise ICE-powered 2-wheelers, which will account for the majority of sales in the short to mid-term, while keeping one eye on the long-term and steadily but calculatively investing into it. This will prevent putting all of your financial eggs in the EV basket.
Honda apparently intends to produce 10 new electric 2-wheelers by 2025 in addition to continuing to offer flex-fuel cars. Many believe Honda will introduce the electric Activa in April, but we’ll all have to wait and see how things play out.
