While Mahindra Is all set to launch it new Scorpio N and bring a upheaval in the market the brand has ulterior plans that might result in a similar upheaval in the EV market as well. As reported by Auto car India Mahindra would launch an EV offering into the market in the first quarter of the next year probably January. Mahindra had already showcased XUV 300 ,Kuv 100 EV version during the AutoExpo.
Hormazd Sorabjee , Editor Autocar india broke the news through his twitter handle. The tweet also reveals another interesting thing. The tweets say that the electric XUV300 will not be a sub-4 metre compact SUV. Instead, it will be a 4.2-metre long mid-size SUV. This is because there are no tax advantages for compact SUV electric vehicles so Mahindra wants to take advantage of most of the length. Hence, the new SUV will measure 4.2-metres.
The car would directly contest against the Nexon EV which has already taken a formidable lead in the EV market. The manufacturer would use the XUV 300 as a underpinning for its new EV offering it would be interesting to see how mahindra manages space as with an EV conversion would require extra space for batteries as well as a motor . While Tata managed to provide a range of about 300+ in the EV max without any compromise in the space. Mahindra has a herculean task to achieve the same with the more slender XUV 300.
Spotted testing earlier
XUV300 EV was also spotted testing on our Indian roads. It was very similar to the ICE-powered XUV300 but was running on steel wheels and the charging port’s door was located on the front fender. There were no other changes to the SUV. However, it could be an early prototype and Mahindra will use the powertrain for the new electric mid-size SUV. As of now, its evident that a change in the body style would eat into the price Mhindra aims for the car as a a body style change would increase the prices of the car and would lead the manufacturer to loose the battle in competitive pricing.
Its possible juts like Tata Mahindra might bring in two variants with changes in the range that they can do, but since mahindra is joining the EV party late the herculean task would be to gain the attention of the people towards itself.
