MG’s Entry Level EV, Spotted Testing, Car To Be Showcases In Upcoming AutoExpo

Published Date:

MG Motor India is in a pursuit to bring in a entry level EV which would be based on the sister brand of the manufacturer the Wulings Air EV. The Wuling was recently launched in Indonesia and is supposed to be the official car of the G20 summit. The E230 is the latest model to be built on the company’s Global Small Electric Vehicles (GSEV) platform which already has multiple body styles.  In a recent leak the car was spotted testing under heavy camouflage, the test mule unit must have been a import as it was a left hand drive vehicle. the car is basically a wuling air EV underneath which the manufacturer would sell as an MG.

Design Of the Car

The Air EV has the same Funky , Boxy character of the Hongguang Mini EV, but the car looks more futuristic.the nose mounted LED bar which runs straight through the front into the doors has been completely lifted of the Wuilng , in fact the whole design of the car is from wuling MG would only put on their badge and make the car more domestically viable. The Air EV’s door’s are a little bit longer than the other cars based on the same platform . A vertically oriented window sits behind the front doors and might help in ventilating in cabin air. The headlamps of the car car sit below the angular styled front bumper which houses slim fog lamps as well as a body colored panel at the bottom.

The rear style is very clean, with a curved windscreen and small tail-light units that, in a way, mimic the style of the headlights. Below the windscreen sits a neat horizontal light bar that stretches right along the breadth of the rear of the car just like in the front.

Battery Pack

The car would be smaller than even the Suzuki Alto which is perfect for the pursuit it has been designed for. Its small quirky design would help the car needle through city streets without any problems. The car would have a battery pack of about 20KWH to 25 KWh , which should offer a real world driving range of about 150KM’s which means the car would be an intercity vehicle only as until the charging infrastructure picks up pace. The power out put from the battery pack would be some where around 40hp.

MG plans to pace the as a friendly runabout vehicle rather than a full fledged family vehicle. The vehicles have received a instant success in China and china being a crowded auto market , has inspired MG to take a chance and launch the car in India. Priced at around Rs 10 lakh, the E230 is no doubt pricey compared to an ICE equivalent, but to add value, MG India plans to equip it to the hilt. Among other bits of kit, it most certainly gets a giant touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster and a host of connectivity features to appeal to the young and trendy urban buyer.

Battery Packs To be locally Sourced

Mg motors would source the battery locally from  Tata Auto Comp which recently entered into a joint venture with the Chinese battery supplier Gotion for design manufacture as well as maintenance of Lion battery packs for vehicles in India.

The pricing revealed as of now by MG seems a bit sketchy to garner positive attention in India, but never say never the car just might catch on due to its funky out of the box design. MG is expected to reveal the car in 2023 Auto Expo.
