In an interesting development related to the Tesla Model 3, the much-anticipated electric sedan was recently spotted testing on the streets in Pune, ahead of its launch in India.
Tesla, the Elon Musk-led US electric automaker, has been creating buzz in the country ever since it was officially confirmed that the electric sedan will make its debut in India.
Three Tesla Model 3s coming to India
Previously, reports had suggested that the company would import three Model 3s to India for testing and ARAI approval. One of the three vehicles was recently spied on roads, as per an image shared by an Instagram account. The blue coloured electric sedan had a temporary license plate.
Tesla has already registered Tesla Indian Motors & Energy Pvt Ltd in Bengaluru, Karnataka as its subsidiary. It may have its headquarters in Mumbai and showrooms in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The Model 3 is the cheapest Tesla vehicle. Hence, it might be the first from the company to hit the Indian market.
Tesla’s global lineup
The global product lineup of Tesla includes the Model S sedan, the Model X SUV, the Model 3 compact and Model Y compact crossover. As India is a price sensitive market, it is most likely that Tesla will make India debut with the Model 3. However, since India is a large market for small SUVs, the Model Y may also be on cards.
The Model 3 is a sedan that claims a 0-100 km/h speed in 3.1 seconds and a range of 500 km+ compared to the top variant. However, it is not clear yet if all variants of the electric sedan will arrive in India. Since Tesla has huge investments in its Shanghai plant and it will build the Model 3 there, the vehicles may come directly from China.
Price and launch date
Since this is a CBU, the car could cost around Rs 55 lakh rupees, ex-showroom. Tesla could launch its first car in India later this year. The Tesla Model 3 will take on Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Jaguar XE, and Audi A4.
