Toyota has been in a pursuit to bring to the Indian market its Mid Size SUV which would take upon the rivals like the KIA Seltos as well as the Hyundai Creta. The car has been developed under a joint venture with Maruti Suzuki. Both the brands have been spotted testing their new developments a few times in the past. Both brands have been a profound contender in the sub compact SUV market segment with more or less the same car which is the Maruti Suzuki Brezza as well as the Urban Cruiser for the Toyota. The new development which has been code named the YFG by Maruti Suzuki and D22 by Toyota would allow both the brands to grasp a much needed market share in the midsize SUV market segment.
Although Toyota has now announced that they would call their car Toyota Urban Cruiser Hydrer, the brand would expand the existing Urban cruiser line up with the new model. The car would make global; debut on 1st of July 2022. The Suzuki counterpart it seems would go on sale later as there have been no info as to when it would launch as of now. With No option for a diesel engine it would be vital to notice what kind of a reaction the car would create.
Cars To Share Platform
The development of the SUV is the first proper and major joint venture amongst the two manufacturers, and the development would be based on the Toyota’s heavily localized TNGA-B or (DNGA) platform which offers a modular monocoque platform with mild hybrid setup capabilities. Both the cars would be launched with Hybrid capabilities the cars would have similar equipment’s and powertrains while they would maintain their own unique styling, we hope as a dull similarity as seen in-between the Urban cruiser as well as the Vitara Brezza would just dampen the excitement there is in the market regarding the two SUV’s.
Two Engine Options
Toyota will supply the hybrid systems for the SUVs, which are expected to come with two petrol engine options. The lower-spec engine would be a mild-hybrid and the higher variant a full-hybrid, which should also be able to run in full EV mode for a limited distance, like the Toyota Prius and the Camry hybrid. All the equipments would be heavily localized to keep the pricing of the cars inline , the competition in the mid size SUV segment is profound hence a competitive price would make or break the cars foray into the market.
Ahead of official debut Engine Specifications of the cars have leaked, both the cars would have two engine options one being he 1.5 litre 4 cylinder engine with a mild Hybrid setup that we have already seen on the Ertiga as well as the XL6, while the other one is based on the same engine and has a much stronger self charging HYBRID system attached to it it delivers a max out put of about 116 ps. the 103 hp motor would be mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and a 6 speed automatic. while the motor with the strong HYBRID system would be offered with a eCVT automatic.
Both the cars would be feature rich with features like sunroof , smart connectivity Hybrid systems as well as cruise controls drive modes etc. Both the cars would lack a diesel engine in their variants which could be a challenge for them as the market leaders still operate on diesel engines. We hope the HYBRID systems are tangible enough to compensate for the lack of diesel engines economy.
