The all-new Mahindra Thar was launched in India in 2020 and is indeed a very capable vehicle and the Toyota Fortuner is its competitor.

The video shows the pre-facelift Toyota Fortuner 4X4 automatic taking on the Thar 4X4 MT in tug-of-war. And the one that wins proves to be the more powerful.
Three rounds
There are three rounds using three different modes. In the first round, both Thar and Fortuner are in 4X2 mode, while the second round sees both vehicles in 4X4 High Mode. Similarly, the last round witnesses both in 4X4 L mode.

So, in the first round, both Thar and Fortuner win one point each.
In the second round, the Toyota Fortuner manages to pull the Thar across the line with an ease, while Mahindra Thar struggles to find a grip.
In the third round, Toyota Fortuner pulls Mahindra Thar across the line with an ease. Hence, you now know the winner!
Mahindra Thar vs Toyota Fortuner
Both the Mahindra Thar as well as the Toyota Fortuner you saw in the video, use diesel engines. The Mahindra Thar packs a 2.2-liter mHawk engine capable of churning out a maximum power of 130 Bhp and peak torque of 300 Nm. The power mill is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
On the other hand, the Toyota Fortuner gets all its power from the 2.8-litre engine that delivers a maximum power of 174 Bhp and 450 Nm of peak torque. This unit is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
While the Mahindra Thar rolls on CEAT A/T 255/60 R18 tyres, the Toyota Fortuner gets Bridgestone dual-terrain hybrid tyre with 265/60 R18. The Fortuner’s weight is much higher than that of the Thar, giving it an added advantage.
