2 Vaishno Devi Pilgrims Killed in Landslide on New Track in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi
Jammu: Tragedy struck on the new track to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Monday, when a landslide claimed the lives of two women pilgrims and left a young girl seriously injured. The incident occurred near Panchi, approximately three kilometers from Bhawan, around 2:35 PM, according to officials.
Details of the Incident
The landslide caused significant damage to a portion of an overhead iron structure, under which the pilgrims were trapped. The women were on their way to the shrine when the landslide struck, leaving them with no time to escape. The young girl accompanying them was grievously injured and is receiving medical treatment.
Immediate Response and Rescue Operations
Deputy Commissioner of Reasi, Vishesh Paul Mahajan, confirmed the unfortunate incident, stating that the preliminary report indicates the deaths of two women and severe injuries to a girl. Senior police and civil administration officers immediately rushed to the scene, and rescue operations were promptly launched. The movement of pilgrims on the track has been suspended for safety reasons.
Safety Measures and Ongoing Investigation
Officials are currently on-site to manage the situation and provide assistance to other pilgrims in the area. The Deputy Commissioner is also en route to Katra, the base camp for those visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine, to oversee the rescue efforts and ensure the safety of all pilgrims.
Previous Incidents
This incident comes nearly two years after a tragic stampede at the Vaishno Devi shrine on New Year’s Day in 2022, which resulted in the deaths of 12 pilgrims and left 16 others injured. The latest landslide highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and infrastructure of the pilgrimage routes.
