Ahmedabad, India -Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested 50 Bangladeshi nationals residing at Chandola Lake area from the city under charges of residing in the city with fake documents. Police have also questioned around 200 more Bangladesh nationals for cracking the racket investigation.
Why were police forced to act?
The operation was based on a tip-off that the Bangladeshi nationals were using forged papers for identification and residence, the police said. Further investigation now would focus on how such documents were prepared and who from among the local population was party to the forgery network.
Background: Home Minister Announces Citizenship
Last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the government is willing to grant citizenship under the CAA for refugees who had fled to India seeking refuge from religious persecution in neighboring countries. Shah posted on the platform "X" that with the help of CAA, these people can lead a dignified life in India.
CAA and its Impact on Bangladeshi Nationals
The CAA seeks to provide citizenship to refugees who face religious persecution but does not include those people staying in India on fake documents. This, therefore, extends only to the condition of facing religious persecution and people who have come to India as refugees, but it excluded the entry of those people into India under fake pretenses.
Investigations Ongoing and Public Concerns
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has continued to investigate the crime allegedly to unveil the network that produces and distributes these fake documents circulated and used among Bangladeshi nationals in the region. Their work will be furthered checking illegal residency to maintain national security and uphold immigration laws.
