Bengaluru-Chennai Travel Time to Drop by 25 Minutes After Successful Trial

South Western Railway successfully conducted a trial run of trains at a speed of 110 to 130 kmph between Bengaluru and Chennai to improve connectivity and reduce travel time. The trial was conducted on the Bengaluru-Jolarpettai route, where a train reached a speed of 130 kmph.
The train departed KSR Bengaluru at 8:05 AM and arrived Jolarpettai at 9:28 AM. In return, the same train left Jolarpettai at 2:30 PM and returned back to KSR Bengaluru by 4:03 PM as per Bengaluru Railway Division.
Work done to Enhance Speed
Last year, the enhancement work of enabling trains to run at 130 kmph on the Jolarpettai-Chennai route was completed. The tracks have been certified for high-speed operations, and the same enhancement work of Bengaluru-Jolarpettai section has also been finalized, thereby allowing a successful speed trial.

Lower Travel Times for Major Trains
The Bengaluru-Chennai route, which stretches 359 km, is covered by two Vande Bharat and two Shatabdi trains. Currently, the Vande Bharat trains take 4 hours and 25-35 minutes to cover the distance. With the success of the speed trial, the travel time for these trains will now be reduced to just 4 hours, saving up to 25 minutes.
Similarly, the Shatabdi trains currently taking around 5 hours to cover the distance shall reduce their journey time by 20 minutes, flattening it at 5 hours.
Increased Speed Connectivity Between Metropolis Cities
Travel time will be reduced through this action, which should further strengthen the link between two of South India's biggest cities, Bengaluru and Chennai. It is in continuation of efforts by Indian Railways to optimize travel time and infrastructure for high-speed rail operations.
