Bengaluru: First double-decker flyover opens - all you need to know about the Rs 449 crore project

The much-anticipated double-decker flyover stretching from Ragigudda to the Central Silk Board junction in Bengaluru has been officially opened by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy.

This innovative rail-cum-road flyover, which cost Rs 449 crore, is now available for vehicular traffic and includes loops and ramps designed to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Describing the event as a “historic” moment for Bengaluru, Shivakumar also revealed plans to construct 150 km of flyovers and signal-free corridors to alleviate the city’s notorious traffic congestion.

Located near the Central Silk Board junction, the signal-free double-decker flyover intersects both the Outer Ring Road and Hosur Road. It spans 5.12 km from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board, providing uninterrupted travel from Ragigudda to HSR Layout and Hosur Road. This project is expected to reduce travel time by over 30 percent for commuters heading towards K R Puram and Hosur Road.

While the main flyover is operational, the connecting ramps to HSR Layout, Ragigudda, and BTM Layout are still under construction and are anticipated to be completed by June 2025, according to The Indian Express.

The double-decker structure includes a Metro line on the upper deck and a roadway for vehicles on the lower deck. This Metro project is part of the Reach 5 Line under Phase-2, connecting R V Road to Bommasandra over 19.15 km and featuring 16 stations. It includes two interchange stations, with one at Jayadeva Junction, which comprises a road underpass, road flyover, Reach 5-line Metro platform, and Reach 6-line Metro platform.

Officials from the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced that the Yellow Line is expected to be operational by the end of the year, initially running at least eight trains every 15 minutes. The second train for the Yellow Line is expected to arrive by August 15. Major civil and system works are nearing completion, and prototype testing of the new trains is currently underway.
