Deadline for HSRP Installation Set for Sept. 15: Only 52 Lakh Vehicles Equipped

BENGALURU, Sept. 14 — The final deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles in Karnataka is September 15, with only 52 lakh vehicles having complied so far. Following the expiration of the deadline, vehicle owners who have not yet installed the HSRP will face a fine of ₹500 starting September 16.

Despite the imposition of fines, enforcement actions will be delayed until September 18, according to Karnataka Transport Commissioner Yogesh. This delay is due to an upcoming court hearing on September 18 regarding HSRP installation, which may affect further decisions on penalties and deadline extensions.

The transport department has previously extended the deadline multiple times due to slow compliance. Currently, only 26% of the state's two crore vehicles have been fitted with the HSRP. The department attributes the low installation rate to vehicle owners' lack of response.

Following September 15, traffic police will initiate special operations to enforce the HSRP requirement, particularly in areas with high vehicle volumes. However, vehicle owners have until September 18 to address their non-compliance without facing immediate penalties.

The HSRP mandate, which applies to vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, was first announced in August 2023. The initial deadline was set for November 17, 2023, but was extended three times due to the slow pace of installations.
