Karnataka Cabinet Decisions: Siddaramaiah Government Forms Committee to Review COVID-19 Inquiry Report, Considers Special Assembly Session

Bengaluru, September 6, 2024 — The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has made two significant decisions regarding the COVID-19 management controversy. The Cabinet has resolved to form a committee to examine the interim report by the Justice Kunha-led inquiry commission, which addresses alleged irregularities amounting to thousands of crores during the previous BJP administration. Additionally, the government is considering calling a special session of the state legislature to discuss the findings if necessary.

The committee, chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh and including Additional Chief Secretary L.K. Atheeq among other officials, has been tasked with thoroughly analyzing the report. This report, which spans 1,772 pages, details alleged irregularities in the procurement of medicines, medical supplies, and reimbursement for private hospital treatments during the pandemic. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within a month.

Law Minister H.K. Patil explained, “The report highlights significant misuse of funds amounting to crores of rupees under the guise of COVID-19 management. It also mentions missing key documents related to purchases. This has been brought to the Cabinet’s attention by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who noted that the report identifies several discrepancies cited by the Public Accounts Committee.”

The Cabinet is also deliberating on whether to convene a special session of the state legislature to discuss the commission’s findings. This move aims to ensure transparency and accountability regarding the allegations of corruption and mismanagement during the COVID-19 crisis.

Overall, these decisions underscore the government’s commitment to addressing and investigating the alleged financial misconduct and ensuring that the public is informed of the findings and subsequent actions.
