Namma Metro Plans 15-20% Ticket Hike, BMRCL Seeks Public Feedback
BENGALURU, October 5, 2024 — Bengaluru's Namma Metro, the city's lifeline for commuters, is set to introduce a significant fare hike, with ticket prices expected to rise by 15-20%. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has invited public suggestions on the proposed increase, with commuters given until October 21 to submit their opinions via email to ffc@bmrc.co.in.
The last fare hike for Namma Metro was in 2017, and rising operational costs have prompted BMRCL to consider revising ticket prices. The newly established Fair Fixation Committee (FFC), an independent body, is leading the review process.
Commuters currently pay a minimum of ₹10 and a maximum of ₹60 for metro tickets. With the proposed hike, the new fares are expected to be implemented by next month. A public consultation is underway, and officials are urging citizens to provide their feedback before final decisions are made.
BMRCL spokesperson Yashwant Chauhan emphasized that the fare hike is necessary due to rising operational costs. However, many commuters have voiced concerns, noting that the price hike comes amid an already high cost of living, with recent increases in the prices of essential items like milk, petrol, and diesel.
The final decision on the fare hike will be made following the committee's report, which will take into account both public input and the financial sustainability of the metro system.
