Chennai Cyclone Fengal

Cyclone Fengal made landfall over the northern coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Saturday evening, bringing heavy rains and strong winds. The storm, which had been closely monitored by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), caused significant disruptions, including flight cancellations and tragic incidents in Chennai.

Cyclone Fengal's Impact on Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

At around 3 am on Sunday, the IMD confirmed that Cyclone Fengal had made landfall near Puducherry. The cyclone had a wind speed of 65-75 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 85 kmph. The storm remained stationary for a few hours and slowly weakened into a deep depression by 6 am.

The storm triggered intense rainfall in northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, causing widespread waterlogging. Authorities issued warnings, but the damage was relatively limited. According to Tamil Nadu's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, KKSSR Ramachandran, no significant damage was reported immediately, although further assessments were expected later.

In Chennai, the cyclone caused serious power outages and flight disruptions. Tragically, three people lost their lives due to electrocution in separate incidents. One of the victims was a migrant worker who was electrocuted while attempting to withdraw cash from an ATM. His body was later found floating near the machine, highlighting the dangers posed by the storm.

Due to heavy rain and strong winds, Chennai Airport was temporarily closed, halting flight operations until 4 am on Sunday. The closure led to the cancellation of 55 flights and the diversion of 19 others, affecting both domestic and international travel. On the day the airport resumed operations, at least 12 flights were delayed, adding to the travel chaos.

Efforts to Prevent a Repeat of 2015 Floods in Chennai

The heavy rainfall raised fears of a repeat of the devastating 2015 Chennai floods. As a precaution, residents in flood-prone areas were advised to stay safe. The Greater Chennai Corporation worked tirelessly to help those affected, distributing food to over 2.3 lakh people. Additionally, nearly 200 people were relocated to relief camps from low-lying areas. Local authorities also closed six of the city's 22 subways to prevent further flooding.

While Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry, the union territory escaped with minimal damage. Authorities had sent warnings to 12 lakh residents, advising them to stay alert. No major incidents were reported from the region, though officials remain cautious in assessing any potential impacts.
