Heavy Rains in Chennai Cause Flight Delays as Cyclonic Conditions Form Over Bay of Bengal

Chennai has been experiencing widespread rainfall since last night, causing significant disruptions, including delays in flight departures. Flights from Chennai to Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad have been delayed due to the inclement weather. As is common in the city during November and December, the arrival of the monsoon often brings severe storms, and this year, the Bay of Bengal is once again showing signs of cyclonic activity.

Cyclonic Conditions Developing Over the Bay of Bengal

The Chennai Meteorological Center has issued an update regarding the situation. According to their report, the atmospheric low-pressure system that had formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal remained active until the morning of the 10th. By the evening, the system intensified into a depression, and it is expected to move westward towards the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka over the next two days.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Coastal Tamil Nadu and Surrounding Areas

As a result, the weather forecast predicts light to moderate rain in several areas along the coastal Tamil Nadu regions, including Puducherry and Karaikal. There will also be thunderstorms with lightning. The heavy rainfall is expected to affect areas like Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu, where isolated instances of intense rainfall are anticipated.

Impact of Depression on Tamil Nadu’s Weather

The depression is expected to move slowly westward, bringing more rain to Tamil Nadu and the surrounding areas, adding to the weather challenges for the region. The local authorities are on alert, and residents have been advised to stay prepared for further heavy showers.
