Kolkata Weather News: As the city continues to sway between sun and storms, a looming threat over the east-central Bay of Bengal has meteorologists on edge. A low-pressure system, expected to form between May 16 and May 22, could deepen into a depression and possibly intensify into a cyclone, as warned by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).

Kolkata, May 12: A big weather change might happen soon near Kolkata. Weather experts say a low-pressure system (that’s when air gets heavy in one place) will form in the Bay of Bengal between May 16 and May 22. Sometimes, these systems can grow into big storms called cyclones.

Right now, no one knows for sure if it will become a cyclone, but experts are watching closely. “It’s too early to say what will happen, but we’ll know more in a few days,” said weather expert H.R. Biswas.

Why People Are Worried

In the last five years, many cyclones have come from this area in May. One very strong one was Cyclone Amphan in 2020, which caused a lot of damage in Kolkata.

Experts say the sea is getting warmer because of climate change, and that makes cyclones more likely.

Kolkata's Weather for the Week

Here’s how the weather may look in Kolkata this week:

  • May 13: A bit cloudy with chances of thunder and lightning.

  • May 14: Same as above.

  • May 15: Clouds in the sky, some rain or thunder likely.

  • May 16: More clouds and possible rain or storms.

  • May 17 & 18: Rain and thunder might happen again.

So, it’s a good idea to carry an umbrella or stay indoors if it rains!

What Should You Do?

There is no cyclone yet, but weather scientists are keeping an eye on the sky. If the system grows stronger, they will tell everyone in time.

If you live in Kolkata, don’t panic. Just stay alert, check the weather news, and be ready in case it rains a lot.
