CM Orders Rename of Rasulabad Ghat to Chandra Shekhar Azad Ghat in Prayagraj After 33 Years

CM Orders Rename: In a significant development, the name of Rasulabad Ghat in Prayagraj has been changed to Chandra Shekhar Azad Ghat. The move comes after the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, had directed local authorities to rename the ghat. This was done to honor the great martyr, Chandra Shekhar Azad, whose cremation took place at this very site.
Why the Name Change Took So Long
It's quite astonishing that in 1991, the Prayagraj Nagar Nigam gave their approval for the renaming of Rasulabad Ghat. Even after three decades since the bill was passed, not even an inch was done on it. All through the years, local politicians and officers did not make a word on this subject.
CM intervention speeds up process
On November 27, 2024, while inspecting, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gave clear instructions to the officials that the ghat would be renamed. After getting the directives from the CM, on December 1, 2024, the Mayor of Prayagraj, Ganesh Keservani, declared the renaming. He also directed the officials to install a plaque at the place for renaming.
The History Behind the Name Change
Rasulabad Ghat, being the place of cremation of the martyr Chandra Shekhar Azad, holds significant historical importance. The memorial built on this site commemorates his sacrifice, and hence, a proposal was made in 1991 to rename the ghat in his honor.
The locals and political leaders have welcomed the name change. The Mayor has instructed a plaque with the new name, Chandra Shekhar Azad Ghat, to be unveiled in the coming days. The event will further commemorate the revolutionary freedom fighter's legacy.
This swift change, prompted by the CM’s instructions, shows how quickly long-pending decisions can be made when there is political will. With the renaming of Rasulabad Ghat to Chandra Shekhar Azad Ghat, the city of Prayagraj has honored the memory of one of India’s greatest freedom fighters.
