New Delhi: A tragic incident occurred in the Churiya Mohalla of Tughlakabad Assembly constituency in South East Delhi early this morning, where a building's roof collapsed, leading to the death of a 3-month-old infant and injuring five others.
The collapse happened around 3 AM, trapping six family members under the debris. The infant, Ikra, succumbed to her injuries, while the other five, including her parents, were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Local residents and neighbors quickly responded to the incident, helping to extricate the victims from the rubble.
Shamshad, a neighbor who arrived at the scene shortly after the collapse, recounted the events: "I received a call at around 3 AM about the roof collapse in the neighboring house. Upon reaching the site, we managed to pull out the trapped family members from the debris. Unfortunately, the 3-month-old baby had already passed away. The affected family, led by Sanu, had been residing in the deteriorating building, which had become increasingly unsafe due to ongoing heavy rains. The building's weakened state led to the fatal collapse. Shamshad further emphasized that timely repairs and maintenance by the landlord could have prevented this tragedy.
South East DCP Rajesh Deo confirmed the incident, stating that the police received information about the roof collapse in Churiya Mohalla, Tughlakabad, resulting in multiple injuries and the death of the infant, Ikra. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter to determine the cause and accountability for the collapse.
Authorities are urging landlords to ensure the structural integrity of their properties, especially during the monsoon season, to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
