Following directives from Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, the city police have intensified their drive against illegal immigrants, specifically targeting Rohingyas and Bangladeshis. In a recent operation, Delhi Police detained 175 suspected Bangladeshi nationals in the Outer District.

Verification and Deportation Process

The officials of police claim that under legal protocols, people lacking valid documents in India have been identified, detained and being prepared to send them to Bangladesh. The special drive conducted all over the Outer District, found these individuals had suspicious documentation, prompting further inquiry and legal process against them.

Appeal to Citizens

Delhi Police has been asking people to inform their localities if they witness suspicious persons. In Shahdara and South East also, earlier such operations saw the detection of suspected Bangladeshis.

Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants Are a Long-Standing Problem

Bangladeshi nationals staying in Delhi without documents have long been a controversial issue which has gained importance ahead of Delhi Assembly elections. The Lt Governor has directed the police to act severely against the illegal immigrants.

Role of Municipal Corporation

In a related development, the MCD has issued notices to schools to identify illegal Bangladeshi students and ordered removal of encroachments by illegal immigrants. The MCD has also instructed public health departments not to issue birth certificates to children whose parents are illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Such weekly reports are now mandatory.
