Delhi Rains: Building Collapses in Sabzi Mandi Amid Heavy Downpour, Many Feared Trapped

New Delhi: As Delhi experienced heavy rains on Wednesday evening, a major incident occurred in the Sabzi Mandi area of North District. Amidst the downpour, a building collapsed, raising fears that several people might be trapped under the debris.
The building, located near Ghanta Ghar Robin Cinema, collapsed around 9 PM due to the intense rainfall. Upon receiving the information, the fire department dispatched five vehicles to the site for the rescue operation.
Record Rainfall and Red Alert
Delhi recorded over 100 millimeters of rain within an hour on Wednesday, leading to severe waterlogging in multiple areas and prompting the weather office to issue a 'Red Alert'. The sudden deluge has led to concerns about potential flash floods, with a national bulletin listing areas in Delhi that need to be on high alert.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), such a high amount of rainfall in a short period is classified as a "cloudburst". However, there has been no official statement from weather authorities regarding the situation.
Government's Response
Delhi's Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena posted on social media platform 'X', stating that he has alerted the officials to remain vigilant in light of the heavy rainfall. Efforts are underway to manage the situation and ensure the safety of residents.
