Delhi Weather Update: Heavy Overnight Rain Drenches Delhi – What's IMD's Forecast for NCR Today?

Delhi Weather Update: Over the past 15 days, Delhi and the surrounding NCR regions have been experiencing consistent rainfall, with the city nearly completing its monthly rainfall quota. Although there were concerns that the August 15th celebrations at the Red Fort might be disrupted by rain, the day passed without any such interruption. However, on Thursday evening, heavy showers drenched several parts of Delhi, providing much-needed relief from the oppressive humidity. Fortunately, no reports of traffic jams were recorded due to the rain.

For today, August 16, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any rain warnings for Delhi, Ghaziabad, or Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida). However, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Gurgaon and Faridabad.

The IMD also reported that the monsoon has now returned to its normal position, leading to continuous rainfall in North Indian regions, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Eastern Rajasthan, and Delhi. The situation is similar in the hilly regions, with heavy rains expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of the Northeast, including Sikkim, Assam, and Manipur. Notably, the past 15 days have seen record rainfall in the mountains, leading to over 140 road closures in Himachal Pradesh and severe conditions in Uttarakhand.

IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Eastern Rajasthan, the Ganges region of West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and South Interior Karnataka. Additionally, heavy rains are expected in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana-Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Western Rajasthan, and Western Madhya Pradesh. The department also forecasts rainfall in Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Lakshadweep, and coastal areas of the country. Thunderstorms and rain are likely in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya.

The IMD has also warned of stormy weather, with wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 kmph, over parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and Kerala. Winds could reach speeds of 45 to 55 kmph and up to 65 kmph in some areas of the Bay of Bengal, particularly over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the plains of the Ganges. Fishermen have been advised to avoid these areas due to the dangerous conditions.
