How Will the Fine be Reduced?
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot shared details of the new policy through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He stated, “To ease the lives of Delhi residents and facilitate the settlement of traffic fines, the Delhi government has decided to reduce the fine amount by 50% under certain sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.”
He further explained that a proposal has been sent to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval. Under this new rule, if fines are paid within 90 days of issuance, a 50% reduction will be applied. For fines issued after the notification of this rule, payment within 30 days will also qualify for a 50% reduction. Gahlot credited Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the initiative, stating that the government remains dedicated to making life easier and more comfortable for the people of Delhi.
When Will the Rule Apply?
The discount will apply to several traffic offenses, including allowing someone to drive without a valid license, dangerous driving, driving while mentally or physically unfit, and overspeeding. The objective of this provision is to encourage citizens to settle their fines promptly, thus reducing the burden on courts and the Transport Department.
The new rule aims to promote timely payment of fines and is expected to ease the legal process surrounding traffic violations.
Deployment of New Officers
In an effort to simplify the legal process and minimize delays, the Delhi government has deployed head constables from the Delhi Traffic Police and the Transport Department. Additionally, assistant traffic inspectors from the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and higher-ranking officials will assist in enforcing traffic regulations and reducing violations across the city.
This initiative seeks to reduce the administrative load and ensure quicker resolution of traffic-related offenses, benefitting both the public and the authorities.
