New Delhi: After sealing 13 coaching centers in Old Rajinder Nagar by Sunday night, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday, 29 July, sealed the Drishti IAS centre located in Nehru Vihar. This action follows the tragic death of three UPSC aspirants due to flooding in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle.

The Drishti IAS centre was operating in the basement of Vardhaman Mall, housing seven to eight halls, each accommodating 250 to 300 students. The swift action by the MCD prevented students from retrieving their belongings before the premises were sealed.

Previously, the MCD had sealed IAS Gurukul, Chahal Academy, Plutus Academy, Sai Trading, IAS Setu, Topper’s Academy, Dainik Samvad, Civils Daily IAS, Career Power, 99 Notes, Vidya Guru, Guidance IAS, and Easy for IAS. These actions are part of a broader effort to ensure compliance with safety regulations and prevent similar incidents in the future.

In addition to sealing the coaching centers, the MCD has commenced bulldozer operations in Old Rajinder Nagar to remove encroachments and address the waterlogging problem caused by blocked drains, which contributed to the basement flooding.

So far, seven arrests have been made in connection with the incident, including the CEO and coordinator of Rau's IAS Study Circle, the owner of the basement, and the driver of a vehicle whose actions allegedly led to water entering the basement.

The issue was also raised in Parliament, where Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar acknowledged the concerns related to youth demographic dividend and the poor state of urban infrastructure. The swift actions by the MCD reflect the urgent need to address these infrastructural challenges and ensure the safety of students.

The tragic event has highlighted the critical need for stringent enforcement of building codes and safety measures in educational institutions, especially those operating in high-density urban areas. The authorities' ongoing actions aim to prevent such incidents from recurring and to safeguard the welfare of students across the city.
