MUMBAI — After the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique on Saturday, a man named Shubham Lonkar allegedly took responsibility for the assassination through a Facebook post. However, when the police arrived at his home in Akola later that night, they found the house locked and Lonkar missing.
Shubham Lonkar Linked to Lawrence Bishnoi Gang
Shubham Lonkar, who hails from the Akot Taluka region of Akola district, has been on the police's radar before. Earlier in February 2024, Lonkar was arrested for possession of illegal firearms. Authorities seized three pistols and 11 live cartridges from him, and it is suspected that he is affiliated with the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. In his now-viral Facebook post, Lonkar allegedly used the alias "Shubbu Lonkar."
The police have intensified their search for Lonkar, but as of now, his whereabouts remain unknown.
Investigation into Facebook Post
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Amol Mittal, who is heading the investigation, said that the police’s actions were triggered by the Facebook post claiming responsibility for Siddique's murder. The post has raised suspicions, but it is unclear whether Lonkar wrote the post himself or if someone else used his account. Regardless, the police are investigating all angles, including his alleged ties to the Bishnoi gang.
In the Facebook post, the gang claimed responsibility for the killing, citing Siddique’s connections with underworld figure Dawood Ibrahim as the motive. However, Mumbai police have yet to officially confirm the authenticity of the post.
The Murder of Baba Siddique
Baba Siddique, a well-known figure in Maharashtra's political and Bollywood circles, was shot dead on Saturday night outside his office. Three gunmen opened fire as he was about to get into his car, fatally wounding him. Two suspects have been arrested, while the third remains at large.
Siddique was not only a political leader but also known for hosting lavish iftar parties attended by Bollywood’s top celebrities. His murder has shocked the political landscape and continues to be a topic of major concern as the investigation unfolds.
As police continue their hunt for Lonkar and other potential suspects, the case remains a high priority for law enforcement in Mumbai and Akola.
