Mumbai: Heavy Rain Brings City To A Standstill! Andheri Subway Closed, Major Areas Flooded, Flight Diverted

Mumbai: Torrential rain since Saturday evening has caused widespread disruption in Mumbai and its suburbs, resulting in the closure of the Andheri subway and severe waterlogging in several areas including Dadar East, Marine Drive, and Lower Parel. The Mumbai Police issued an advisory on Sunday afternoon, urging residents to stay indoors unless necessary.
The weather also impacted air travel, with Flight UK696 from Amritsar to Mumbai being diverted to Ahmedabad due to adverse conditions at Mumbai airport. The flight is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad at 12:15 PM. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
The Mumbai Police posted on social media platform X: “In view of the continuous and heavy rains in Mumbai, citizens are requested to avoid going to the coastal areas and move out of their house only if necessary. Take precautions and #Dial100 in case of emergency.”

Videos of heavy rain and strong winds at Marine Drive have surfaced on social media. The Lower Parel railway workshop area and parts of Kurla and Chembur were also inundated. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) disaster control room is closely monitoring the situation, with flooding reported in parts of Navi Mumbai, including Koparkhairane. Traffic congestion has been severe in many parts of the city. Rescue operations were seen in Belapur, where the fire brigade used ropes to assist stranded people, and in Dahanu, where residents were seen wading through water.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the situation on X, saying: “The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain in Konkan and some districts of the state including Mumbai today. In this background, the Chief Minister @mieknathshinde has given instructions that SDRF, District Administration, Police, Municipal Corporation, Municipalities, various local self-government bodies should be vigilant and help the citizens in all possible ways. The administration should plan and manage accordingly by taking information from weather department, disaster management unit from time to time about the situation. The Chief Minister has instructed everyone to be vigilant and ensure that no kind of trouble is created for the citizens.”

IMD and RMC Mumbai Warnings
Mumbai’s Regional Meteorological Centre has indicated active monsoon conditions over most of Maharashtra for the next three to four days. The city and its suburbs are expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, with moderate to heavy rain continuing for the following 48 hours.
The India Meteorological Department has also issued an orange alert for central Maharashtra, forecasting heavy rain from July 21-24.
